Key Takeaways:
Samsung’s latest foldable flagships – Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 – were the talk of the town until they were launched last week. And now, the focus has shifted towards the upcoming Galaxy S25 lineup as rumors about the devices are intensifying.
According to a top-rated tipster, the Korean electronic giant is set to prioritize the smartphone’s design element, with the Ultra getting a complete overhaul. A new leak has provided details on some other design cues we might see on the Galaxy S25 Ultra.
Galaxy S25 Ultra To Get Rounded Corners And Will Be Thinner Than S24 Ultra
One common complaint users have with the Galaxy S “Ultra” is the difficulty of holding the devices due to their sharper edges and flatter display. Word on the street is that Samsung has listened to users’ feedback and decided to change this with the upcoming Galaxy S25 Ultra.
Samsung has finalized the designs of all three smartphones in the Galaxy S25 lineup – S25, S25 Plus, and S25 Ultra. However, it is the most expensive variant of the lineup, the Galaxy S25 Ultra, that everyone is interested in as rumors suggest that the phone is set to get an asymmetrical frame design that will help with the grip.
Tipster ‘Ice Universe’ previously suggested that Samsung will be replacing the sharper edges of the S24 Ultra with rounded corners for better ergonomics that allow for easier grip for a prolonged period. The frame will be more rounded toward the back panel, while the front will remain straight.
This design will supposedly make the phone’s bezels look thinner. The smartphone will retain its width, while the side frame will be narrower in general. Furthermore, the middle panel will be relatively thinner than the one on the S24 Ultra, with smaller hinges that will make it more comfortable to hold.
Ice Universe suggests that the Galaxy S25 Ultra will have a width of 8.4mm, which is 0.2mm thinner than its predecessor. Previous reports suggest that the company promised the thinner design would not impact the camera sensors on the S25 Ultra and the device would continue to offer excellent camera attributes and resolution as promised.
The Galaxy S “Ultra”, unlike its regular and “Plus” siblings has always had sharp edges and this has much to do with Samsung’s decision to adopt the design language of the later versions of the Galaxy Note series, also integrating the S-Pen stylus into it.
Samsung Doing Away With Squared Design On “Ultra”, But Z Series Adopts The Design
The first version of the “Ultra” was the Galaxy S22 Ultra, which came out in early 2022. Since then, Samsung has stuck to the squarish-flat frame with sharp corners for the highest-end Galaxy S series smartphones, despite the ergonomic trade-off.
However, the Korean tech giant is not completely doing away with the square design as was visible on the Galaxy Z Fold 6, which sports a flatter front and back panel with sharper edges, similar to the Galaxy S24 Ultra, S23 Ultra, and S22 Ultra.
Samsung’s flagship smartphones have followed the same design language since at least 2021, and it was high time that something changed and the company has finally decided to give its premium smartphones a design revamp.
If the rumors are true, then Samsung’s design for the Galaxy S25 Ultra would be very much inspired by the rounded frame seen on the Galaxy S21 and S21 Plus, which came out three years ago.
The Galaxy S25, S25 Plus, and S25 Ultra will be announced in early 2025, sometime between January and March. Until then we will continue to hear rumors about the smartphones and also get to see leaks that will give us a glimpse of their design.
