Key Takeaways:
Samsung has announced an official date for its summer Galaxy Unpacked event where it typically unveils the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip, and the Galaxy Watch. This year’s event will be held in Paris on July 10th, with a primary focus on technological advancements in AI, and an all-new wearable.
Samsung Will Announce Galaxy Z Series, Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Ring, and Galaxy Buds in Paris on July 10th
The South Korean electronics giant posted a promotional video on its social media pages showing a subtle yet clear hint of what to expect from the event. The animated clip with references to the host city ends with an abstract shape being folded out, which may be a nod to its upcoming foldable smartphones – the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6.
Samsung’s invite did not reveal details of the products or the AI features it would be announcing. The video’s caption simply read, “Prepare to discover the power of Galaxy AI, now infused into the latest Galaxy Z series and the entire Galaxy ecosystem”.
Other than the latest generation Z series foldable smartphones, Samsung is expected to debut the Galaxy Watch 7, the Galaxy Buds 3 and Buds 3 Pro, and an all-new wearable called the Galaxy Ring.
Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 Are Minor Upgrades But Will Be Powered By Galaxy AI
Rumors suggest that Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 will only be a modest upgrade over last year’s Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5. From what we know, the Z Flip 6 will get a slightly bigger battery, while the Z Fold 6 will sport a more boxier design with a wider cover screen.
This is in line with the recent trend set by Samsung, focusing on incremental improvements rather than introducing groundbreaking innovations every few months.
The Galaxy Z series smartphones will be feature-laden with Galaxy AI – Samsung’s generative AI model introduced with the Galaxy S24 series – and powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC.
Galaxy Ring Set to Steal the Show at Galaxy Unpacked
However, the most eagerly awaited product of the event might not even have a display. The Galaxy Ring, as it will be called, was first teased at Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event in January where it was shown alongside the Galaxy S24 models.
Shortly after, the company showed off a prototype of the Galaxy Ring at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, which helped generate quite a buzz for the device.
The ring-shaped wearable will come in finger sizes ranging from 5 to 12 inches. While the smaller ones will be powered by a 17mAh battery pack, the larger rings are rumored to get an 18.5mAh or 22.5mAh battery.
Leaks suggest that the Galaxy Ring, which supports Bluetooth LE and Bluetooth 5.4 for connectivity, will be used to control multiple devices within the Galaxy ecosystem. It will be available in three colors: Ceramic Black, Platinum Silver, and Gold.
Galaxy Ring Expected to Provide More Accurate Health Readings than Smartwatches
The wearable is set to offer a whole lot of advanced health metrics, especially in terms of sleep. It will work alongside the Samsung Health app, which is set to get a major upgrade next month. The Galaxy Ring could potentially offer more accurate readings than smartwatches and has been confirmed to work with the upcoming Galaxy Watch 7 to track user’s health.
On the other hand, the Ring is not expected to offer much outside of health apps. The device reportedly has no buttons, screen, or haptic feedback, which means there is no way to interact with it like the Galaxy Watch.
Apart from sleep tracking, the Ring will work with the Natural Cycles app to track menstrual cycles using a sensor that reads skin temperature. It will collect heart-rate information throughout the day, and track movements like steps taken and distance covered walking.
Trademark filings and some Samsung patents have shown the Ring to include electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors to measure resting heart rate and report any irregular heartbeat. It will also house a SpO2 sensor to monitor the users’ blood oxygen levels.
The Galaxy Ring could be priced somewhere around the $300 range.
Galaxy Unpacked will be Live Streamed on July 10th at 9 AM ET
The summer Galaxy Unpacked event will be streamed live on Samsung.com, the Samsung Newsroom, and its official YouTube channel on July 10th at 9 AM ET. The company will accept pre-orders for the Z Fold 6, Z Flip 6, Galaxy Buds 3, Galaxy Ring, and Galaxy Watch 7 on launch day, and the devices will be shipped the following week.
