Kenyan telecoms operator Safaricom has launched what it describes as the biggest indigenous public cloud solution in Africa, built at a cost of over USD20 million.
At a gala launch event in Nairobi, Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore announced that the new cloud service, delivered in partnership with Seven Seas Technologies, Cisco and EMC, would include data centre services with hosting, storage and backup.
The services will be targeted both at the public and private sector.
Enterprises will be able to pay monthly subscriptions for their SafaricomCLOUD services, with shared or dedicated servers.
EMC, through its security subsidiary RSA, will secure the service.
One of the first customers is likely to be the Kenyan government, which says its own data centres are running out of capacity.
