Rwandan authorities look to improve health, education

Rwandan President Paul Kagame this week chaired the 12th meeting of the Presidential Advisory Council (PAC) at Urugwiro Village. Among other discussions, the council looked at ways of improving the economy, education and health as a way of fats tracking economic growth.
At the end of the first day of the three-day meeting, Kaia Miller, one of the members of the Presidential Advisory Council said: “High economic growth has been sustained at over 8% over the last four years, and also equally impressive are gains in health and education in terms of enrolment and early childhood education and vocational training to give the community essential skills. Broadly speaking we have to maintain or even increase economic growth which is a challenge. We need increased investments in education and health because people are the engine of economic growth. The remarkable thing about Rwanda is the ability to think creatively about finding funding for its projects.”
The Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Claver Gatete said that the members were impressed that Rwanda’s economy has continued to grow in spite of global financial hitches and the suspension of aid:
“In order to sustain our economic growth, we will focus on economic transformation, rural development, skills development and enhancing accountability on funds. We also discussed private sector development as a key target. We also discussed health and education, on the understanding that a healthy and skilled population can be able to stimulate sustainable economic growth. We are going to look at all avenues of mobilising funds from outside, which is why we are prioritising investment in the capital markets and funds around it.”
Members of the Presidential Advisory Council will on the second day of the meeting visit some health and education projects, after which they will meet and make recommendations on the way forward.
