HBO has launched a number of documentaries on their television run but their recent one which features Peter Todd became a huge sensation in the media world. In it, Todd is unveiled as Satoshi Nakamoto, one of the richest people in the world, and the sole owner of a huge reserve of Bitcoin.
This was like dropping a huge bomb in the crypto world. Even though it was dropped as just a speculation, it lit the crypto community on fire as various investors are still debating over whether it is true or not. Here, we are going to discuss this and the current situation that Mr Todd is facing due to this supposed theory.
Who is Satoshi Nakamato?
Satoshi Nakamoto is the man who shaped the foundation of the world we live in by introducing cryptocurrency into it in place of traditional banking. Even in the past, a lot of people have been accused of being Satoshi. But so far, nobody could prove the identity of the man behind the famous pseudonym.
Over the years, as Bitcoin grew in the market, and with this development, numerous people have continuously tried and failed to find out who exactly the mastermind behind this crypto coin is. And it is no simple task. Note that Satoshi is the man behind Bitcoin, the revolutionary coin, so he is indeed capable of covering his tracks.
Nobody even knows what he looks like even now, just that Satoshi owns a large reserve of Bitcoin, possibly enough to make him a multi-billionaire.
Documentary and allegations
Recently, HBO launched a documentary that was titled “The Bitcoin Mystery”. In the documentary shot by Cullen Hoback, they have put forward various pieces of evidence and are claiming that Peter Todd, a former developer associated with Bitcoin, is in fact, Satoshi Nakamoto. This was put forward based on various circumstantial evidence that Hoback has dug up and put together.
The documentary also featured a scene where Todd looks at the camera and tells that he is Satoshi. Even though, Todd later rebuffed it as a joke through social media later on, various evidence featured in the documentary was used to link Todd to Bitcoin’s creation.
At the time of creating the documentary, Todd was not aware of the intentions of the journalist, Cullen Hubock. When it came to light, what Hubock had done with the documentary, the damage to Todd’s life was already done.
Soon after knowing this, he immediately tried to convey that he is not the founder of Bitcoin through various social media stating that the documentary is very misleading. By then, a lot of people has already watched the show believing him to be the founder of Bitcoin.
Aftermath and Hiding
Immediately after the accusation, Todd released a statement on social media that highlighted the fact that he was not Satoshi. Also, a lot of people are asking for money from him. These constant naggings along with the potential threats were enough to make Peter Todd go into hiding.
After this incident, Todd immediately went into hiding. He was also looking at the possibilities of robbery and kidnappings. He also accused Hoback of promoting his false story with no regard for Todd’s life.
Is Todd really Satoshi Nakamoto?
Now that we have discussed the ordeals that Peter Todd went through, let’s look into the genuineness of his story. However, the bulk of the crypto community hasn’t taken Hoback for his words. They are currently dismissing his words and supposed ‘evidence’ against Todd.
One of the things that worked against Peter Todd was his own personality. One of his funny remarks in the show garnered huge attention after the airing of the documentary. In this, Peter claimed as Satoshi. Even though it was a joke, it had a bad effect on him.
Various scientific evidence that was gathered from the former pictures of Todd during the time Satoshi was active was enough proof to prove that Peter Todd is not Satoshi Nakamoto. However, for Todd, even with these proofs, it is highly unlikely that his life will return to normal even after all the dust settles.
