Key Takeaways:
OpenAI has scheduled an important livestream event on Monday night where the artificial intelligence startup may unveil an all-new voice assistant that is under development.
According to reports, the Microsoft-backed company is working on an AI-powered search product that interlinks audio, text, and image recognition into a single platform. However, CEO Sam Altman recently stated on social media that the upcoming product would not be “GPT5” nor a conventional search engine.
This has sparked even more curiosity about what the event would be about. The billionaire noted that his company has been “hard at work” developing “some new stuff” that “feels like magic”.
In an X post, OpenAI said it would be live-streaming an event that will demo some updates related to ChatGPT and GPT-4.
OpenAI Denies Rumors of AI Search Engine and GPT-5
The timing of the event is also speculative, as it is happening just a day before the Google I/O 2024 where the tech giant is expected to unveil its own AI-powered news product and updates to its large language model – Gemini. Both companies could be competing over new AI search products.
If ChatGPT gets integrated search abilities, then that means it could become much more useful for finding up-to-date information on real-world events, while still offering industry-leading conversational responses. This could revolutionize the use of search engines.
Despite the challenges faced by the LLM when it comes to sourcing real-time information, its recent integration with Microsoft’s Bing and the potential search abilities may enhance its user experience and enhancement.
Last September, OpenAI rolled out voice and image capabilities for ChatGPT. During the announcement, the company demonstrated how its model could, with the help of synthetic voices, casually converse with users and troubleshoot issues like fixing a bike seat, instead of providing basic text responses.
Apple May Announce OpenAI Developed, Cloud-based GPT Assistant for the iPhone During WWDC
Reports indicate the company thinks that a voice assistant is currently too big to be run on personal devices, therefore a cloud-based service is more likely to be deployed for customer service agents.
Speaking of the matter, OpenAI is also in talks with Apple about integrating ChatGPT into iOS 18. More information regarding this will surface during Apple’s upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) scheduled for June 10th. Concurrently, Apple is also planning a full revamp of its in-house voice assistant Siri.
Google is also in discussions with Apple about bringing Gemini to the iPhone, suggesting a possibility that generative AI is joining tech giants together to form a super alliance that could dictate the future direction of the industry.
Bloomberg reported that the aim of introducing new functions to GPT-4 is for the LLM to successfully compete with Google’s Gemini and Perplexity – a startup that specializes in building AI chatbot-powered research and conversational search engines.
