British consumer electronics startup Nothing has announced that it will now offer OpenAI’s artificial intelligence chatbot – ChatGPT – as a virtual assistant on its smartphones Nothing Phone 1 and 2.
The news was confirmed by the company’s CEO Carl Pei on X (formerly Twitter) where he also shared a video showing how ChatGPT could be accessed directly from the phone’s home screen through its quick widget settings.
How to Add ChatGPT as a Virtual Assistant on the Nothing Phone?
Nothing also detailed the steps to assign ChatGPT as a virtual assistant on its smartphones.
- Download and Install ChatGPT App
The first step is to download and install the official ChatGPT from the Google Play Store.
- Login and Use Voice Chat
Now open the app, log in to your OpenAI account, and then proceed to use the AI’s voice chat feature.
- Add ChatGPT Widget to Home Screen
The next step is to add the ChatGPT app as a widget to your Nothing Phone’s home screen using the quick settings panel on the Nothing OS.
- Tap and Use
Simply tap the ChatGPT shortcut on your home screen to use it as your phone’s virtual assistant. The AI will listen to your commands and respond accordingly.
OpenAI introduced its voice chat feature last September, where users can choose from five different voices that professional voice actors craft. The AI can converse in English, Spanish, French, German, Mandarin, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Russian, and Arabic.
The spoken words are transcribed into text using OpenAI’s bespoke “Whisper” speech recognition software.
Nothing Set to Unveil Mid-Range Model at MWC
Nothing is gearing up to announce a new mid-range smartphone that will sit below its current lineup of Phone 1 and Phone 2. The so-called Nothing Phone 2a will be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) on February 27, 2024.
Rumors have it that the Phone 2a will be packed with a Dimensity 7200 chipset, alongside 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of storage.
Nothing has scheduled an event during the MWC that media persons have received an invite for, speculating that it could be the launch of the new device.
Android 14 Comes to Nothing Phone (1)
On Wednesday, Nothing announced that it has started to roll out Android 14 for its Phone 1. The current generation mobile operating system by Google, which was preloaded on the Phone 2, will be available as the Nothing OS 2.5.2 update for the Phone 1.
In its detailed changelog, the company said the update will bring a host of new features to the Phone 1. Nothing OS 2.5.2 will introduce a combined home and lock screen customization page and a new Atmospheric effect that will make your phone’s wallpaper dynamic.
The iconic Glyph interface also gets tweaked with the new update. Users can now access the Music Visualization feature to create Glyph light effects when playing music. OS 2.5.2 also introduces a new Glyph animation to notify when using NFC and is also said to revamp the Flip to Glyph experience.
Phone 1 users can also customize the double-press feature for the power button to quickly access any feature on the device. The lock screen now adds shortcuts for Do Not Disturb, Mute, QR code scanners, and video cameras. Users can also take screenshots with a three-finger swipe gesture.
Nothing OS 2.5.2 also introduces new widgets to the phone, which include a pedometer, media player, and screen time. Additionally, ringtone and notification sounds can be changed separately, a welcome addition to the phone. The update is also said to optimize camera stability.
Nothing promises that its latest OS update will enhance the overall smoothness and responsiveness of the phone and also its battery life.
