Key Takeaways:
British phone manufacturer Nothing just launched a beefier version of its popular mid-range smartphone, the Phone (2a), with the MediaTek Dimensity 7350 Pro chipset. The new device called the Phone (2a) Plus, is the fourth smartphone to be launched by the startup.
The Phone (2a) Plus retains all the good parts of the Phone (2a), like the 6.7-inch OLED screen, the 50-megapixel rear camera setup, and the signature transparent back design with the ‘Glyph’ lighting system. The new phone has an upgraded 50MP front camera, faster charging speeds, and a performance boost over the original phone, which came out in March.
Nothing Releases The Nothing Phone (2a) PlusWith Upgraded Processor And Camera
The Nothing Phone (2a) Plus’ design lets you see some of the ribbon cables and the Glyph lighting shine through. The company said it tried to create an “anthropomorphic appearance” by placing the two rear cameras inside the NFC coil so they look like “two eyes sitting in front of a brain-like hub of intelligence and communication”.
What’s new with the Phone (2a) Plus is that it has a metallic finish which the company says is reminiscent of “technical machinery”. The new device comes in Black like the regular Phone (2a) but also has a new Gray variant.
While Nothing released a ‘Special Edition’ of the standard Phone (2a) in May, which had bits of yellow, red, and blue, no such variant for the Phone (2a) Plus has been announced. The rest of the phone looks and feels the same as the regular Phone (2a).
There is the 6.7-inch 2412 x 1084 resolution AMOLED display with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, a 240Hz touch sample rate, 1,300 nits of peak brightness, and Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5 that is fall and scratch-resistant. The Phone (2a) Plus has an IP54 rating for dust and water resistance and a battery capacity of 5,000mAh.
The biggest upgrade came in the processor and camera departments.
Nothing Phone (2a) PlusGets The “World Exclusive” MediaTek Dimensity 7350 Pro Processor
The Nothing Phone (2a) Plus is powered by MediaTek’s Dimensity 7350 Pro-system-on-chip (SoC), which is designed using TSMC’s 4nm Gen 2 technology. While it is unclear what the key difference between the Pro and non-Pro versions of the Dimensity 7350 is, Nothing says the chipset is a “world exclusive” to its phones.
While both chipsets have the same CPU and GPU designs, the 7350 Pro features higher clocking speeds for specific cores. The 7350 Pro powering the Phone (2a) Plus boasts an octa-core CPU with two ARM Cortex-A715 performance cores that clocked at up to 3.0GHz and six ARM Coretex-A510 efficiency cores clocked at up to 2.0GHz.
Nothing says this figure translates to a nearly 10% improvement over the regular Phone (2a), which shipped with the MediaTek Demensity 7200 Pro.
The GPU in the Nothing Phone (2a) Plusis the ARM Mali-G610 MC4, which clocks at 1.3GHz. The company claims the GPU offers a 30% improvement in gaming performance over the GPU in the Phone 2a. Nothing says its HyperEngine 5.0 technology helps optimize both gaming and performance and battery life.
The Phone (2a) Plus comes with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage, some of which can be utilized as virtual memory through a feature called RAM Booster, improving background performance.
In terms of charging speeds, the Phone (2a) Plus tops at 50W wired charging, which is up from the 45W in the Phone (2a).
The Phone (2a) Plus Has A New 50MP Front Camera
In the camera department, the rear camera remains unchanged from its predecessor, with just the selfie camera being upgraded to a 50MP Samsung JN1 sensor. The Phone (2a) used a 32MP Sony IMX615 image sensor.
The primary camera is still the 50MP Samsung GN9 and the wide-angle camera uses the same 50MP Samsung JN1 image sensor. All three cameras have direct 50-megapixel output, support HDR capture, and 4K 30FPS video recording.
Nothing says its TrueLens Engine with AI Vivid Mode produces “life-like” photos with added color and detail. Furthermore, the Ultra XDR feature, co-developed with Google, enhances lighting in challenging environments by adjusting pixel brightness up to 5 times.
Other camera features include Motion Capture for taking action shots without blur, Night Mode for low-light photography, and AI Portrait Optimiser for group shots.
Nothing Phone (2a) PlusWill Support Software Updates Until Android 17
The Nothing Phone (2a) Pluswill ship with the Nothing OS 2.6, which is based on Android 14. Unlike skins from other manufacturers, the company’s operating system is generally near and free of any bloatware, offering lots of little customization and added features.
This time, Nothing has introduced a News Reporter Widget that utilizes ChatGPT to aggregate daily news simply and intuitively where it is read aloud to the user in CFO Tim Holbrow’s voice. This widget will be available to all Nothing Phone users via an update to the Nothing Widgets app.
Nothing promises three years of software updates and four years of security updates for the Phone (2a) Plus. This means the device will support Android 15, Android 16, and Android 17.
The Nothing Phone (2a) Plus will cost $399 for the 12GB RAM + 256GB storage model, which is $50 more than the Phone (2a). It is currently available in the UK and India. The phone will be sold online in the US through a Beta Program that opens on August 7th.
