The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are set to be Apple’s flagship smartphones for this year. The high-end devices will be announced alongside the standard iPhone 16 and 16 Plus in the fall of 2024.
The premium iPhones are expected to feature a bigger display, upgraded camera, AI-powered chips, and more. We are a few months away from the debut of this year’s iPhones, but in typical leaker fashion, insider information about the new devices is already coming out.
We already have a glimpse of what to expect on the software side of things as Apple showed off the upcoming iOS 18, Apple Intelligence, and a smarter Siri at the WWDC 2024.
From what we know so far, the iPhone 16 Pro models could be loaded with a host of AI-centric features, such as automated photo and video editing, Siri embedded into native apps, ChatGPT-powered interface, and more.
So, read to know more about what we could see in the rumored iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max that we are eager to get our hands on.
Taller, Narrower, and Brighter Display Than the iPhone 15 Pro
Early last year, rumors started to emerge that the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will be noticeably larger than their predecessors. Serial Apple leaker Ross Young claimed that the iPhone 16 Pro will go from the current 6.1-inch to a 6.3-inch display, while the Pro Max will measure in at 6.9 inches, up from 6.7 inches on last year’s iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Young then followed up on his report by suggesting that the iPhone 16 Pro models could be slightly taller and narrower than the iPhone 15 Pro. The upcoming Pro variants are expected to sport an aspect ratio of 19:6:9, rather than 19:5:9.
There are also reports that both iPhone 16 Pro models will have Multi-Lens Array (MLA) AMOLED displays, similar to the ones used by Samsung in its recent flagships and by LG in their top-of-the-line OLED TVs. This could mean that this year’s premium iPhones will have the brightest screen ever shipped with an iPhone.
The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max could have smaller bezels. One source speculates it will be 1.2mm, down from the 1.71mm on the iPhone 15 Pro models.
FaceID Hidden Under the Screen
South Korean publication The Elec claims that the iPhone 16 Pro will have its facial recognition system, FaceID, hidden under the display, similar to how Android phones now have under-display fingerprint scanners. The iPhone 14 Pro series and all iPhone 15 models had their FaceID components housed in the Dynamic Island.
Capture Button for Camera
Last year, Apple introduced the Action Button on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. This time, the accessibility button replacing the mute switch will be coming to all four iPhone 16 models.
Another rumor doing rounds is the addition of a Capture Button on the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max dedicated to taking pictures and recording videos. We could also see Apple debut solid-state, non-physical buttons, on its upcoming flagships.
Before the iPhone 15 Pro’s release, it was widely speculated that Apple could replace the volume and power hard buttons with capacitive touch panels. The company then decided to maintain all the physical buttons and plan to introduce the capacitive Capture Button with the iPhone 16 Pro.
New Colors
As for the iPhone 16 Pro’s colors, leaks suggest that the high-end iPhones will be available in Space Black, White, Gray, and Rose. The colors are all similar to what’s currently available with the iPhone Pros, except for the Rose, which will replace the Titanium Blue.
The Gray will be the Natural Titanium shade, indicating that the Pro series iPhone 16s will be finished in Titanium. Apple is reportedly using an improved process for finishing and coloring the titanium, which could result in a glossier and stainless steel look than the brushed aluminum-like finish on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max.
Cameras
Like its predecessors, the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will get three rear cameras and one front-facing camera, but with major upgrades on the card. The Pro series iPhones are rumored to include an improved 48-megapixel ultrawide lens. This should allow the sensor to capture more light, resulting in better quality when shooting close-angle, especially in low-light environments.
The iPhone 16 Pro Max alone will get a larger main camera sensor that is based on the new 48MP Sony IMX903. The regular Pro will use the same 48MP Sony IMX803 sensor that is found on the current iPhone 15 Pro models.
Both the Pro models are expected to get Tetraprism zoom lenses. This means the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will have at least 5x optical zoom and 25x digital zoom. The iPhone 16 cameras could include a new anti-reflective optical coating that would improve photos by cutting down on lens flare and ghosting.
5G Chip
The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are expected to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X75 modem, which allows for faster and more efficient network connectivity. The X75 offers improved carrier aggregation, plus its sub-6Ghz and mmWave 5G transceiver takes up 25% less circuit board space and uses up to 20% less power.
The modem comes standard with AI and machine learning capabilities. Apple could market the iPhone 16 Pro models as having 5G Advanced connectivity. However, Snapdragon X75 chips are not expected to be used in the standard iPhone 16 and 16 Plus models.
Battery
iPhone 16 Pros are rumored to use stacked battery technology, resulting in higher capacity and a longer lifespan. A stacked battery layout is commonly found in electric vehicles and medical devices but is only now emerging in the smartphone market.
The battery could come with support for a faster 40W wired charging and 20W MagSafe charging. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple plans to use battery cells with increased energy density that could enhance battery life in the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will be similar in size to the ones on last year’s Pros, with a longer lifespan.
