The National Communications Authority (NCA) has made available extra spectrum to MTN and Vodafone for free usage for the next three month period.
The provision of the free extra spectrum to the two leading network operators in the country came at the directive of The President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo.
The initiative is to assist the telcos deal with the current surge in data usage by subscribers who are home following the lockdown of some part of Ghana necessitated by the Coronavirus pandemic.
With regards to the country’s third network operator, AirtelTigo, the Minister noted that it has sufficient spectrum to serve customers.
In another development the government has invoke the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775), Section 100 permitting the President through an Executive Instrument (E. I. 63), to make written request and issue orders to operators or providers of electronic communications networks or service requiring them to provide users information or otherwise in aid of law enforcement or national security.
