MTN Ghana launches MTN App Challenge Version 2.0

MTN Ghana has launched the second edition of its app challenge, dubbed MTN App Challenge Version 2.0. According to Ghana’s leading network operator, this year’s challenge under the theme “Promoting innovative local apps development”, seeks to encourage the development of locally based applications among Ghanaians.
Speaking at the launch of the event, the Chief Marketing Officer, Marketing Division for MTN, Rahul De disclosed that, this year’s edition will like the previous edition give opportunity to people with the skill, urge and talent to develop user friendly mobile applications relevant to the local market.
He noted that mobile application development was creating employment and generating income for an estimated number of 2.3million people across the globe. He however bemoaned the fact that 92 per cent of the App developer communities were found in Asia, Europe and North America. Mr. De explained that the App Challenge from the telecommunication network formed part of its broader agenda to grow the App developer community in Africa as well as increase local content across its footprints.
“We would like to take this opportunity to assure our subscribers that MTN continues to invest in the relevant telecom technologies that enrich their mobile telephony experience. Our three world-class Switch and Data centres, as well as our over 4,000-km fibre roll out across the length and breadth of the country is supporting our drive to increase data penetration in Ghana. Currently, MTN has 3G Coverage in over 190 districts capitals. We believe the capacity of the resources is yet to be fully utilised and our investment in the apps market will help generate more interest”.
The MTN Apps Challenge is geared toward unearthing local talent to develop mobile applications relevant to the Ghanaian community. Application categories for this year’s edition include education, lifestyle and games. The applications should be unique, user friendly and relevant to the Ghanaian market. This year’s edition of the MTN Apps Challenge will see the overall winner receiving a cash prize of GH¢20,000, while each category winner will also receive a cash prize of GH¢15,000.
