MTN Ghana has donated school bags and other educational materials to the Kokrobite D/A Basic School at Kokrobite, a suburb of Accra. The donation forms part of MTN’s 21 Yello Care Campaign geared towards assisting deprived communities in the country with the necessary needed support to improve and better their living conditions.
Over three hundred school bags designed and sewn from MTN banners and flexi materials at National Vocational Training Institute at Dansoman by MTN staffs and books donated by the Rotary Club of Tema and Sakumono were presented to the school children.
Speaking to Biztechafrica during the presentation, the Senior Manager in-charge of Government and Regulatory Affairs, Elena Sarpong said in line with this year’s theme and the company’s vision to lead the delivery of a bold digital world, MTN Ghana is focusing on inculcating Information and Communications Technology into teaching and learning to help bridge the digital divide.
According to her, staffs of MTN will also be offering career guidance to the pupils to enable them get to know the various career opportunities available to them if they strive hard to make education their priority.
Kokrobite is a deprived fishing community located on the west end side of Accra with about thousand five hundred residents mainly fisher folks. The school which serves the community as the only public educational institution in the area has about two hundred and fifty pupils. The school performance according to the headmaster of the school has not been very impressive due to lack of basic educational materials and low attendances from pupils especially during market day since most of them assist their parents in their business at the shores.
Vincent is a teacher at the school; he told Biztechafrica that the school has been relying on the benevolent gestures from individuals and corporate organizations to improve the standard of the education in the community. He thinks the school bags donated by MTN Ghana will go a long way to help pupils of the school carry take care of their books.
