The first nine months of 2021 brought smiles and relief to Maroc Telecom, the Moroccan telecommunications giant, whose international activities generated a turnover of MDH12.676 billion (nearly $1.4 billion) at the end of September 2021, according to the provisional results released last week.
The figures, which reflect a growth of 1.3%, resulted from a fantastic growth of both mobile data and mobile money, which grew by 17.4% and 24.1%, respectively, reports from the capital Rabat said.
Overall, the group’s consolidated turnover stood at MDH26.78 billion (nearly $3 billion), down by 2.6% (2.1% at constant exchange rate) compared to the same period a year ago.
The super performance of its international subsidiaries and fixed data in Morocco partially offsets the decline in turnover from mobile services in Morocco, the report added.
Internationally, the company said its telephony mobile subscribers reached 48 546 000 customers for the same period, with Burkina Faso leading the charge by 10 259 000, followed closely by Côte d’Ivoire and Mali with 9 877 000 and 8 011 000, respectively.
The report shows the following figures regarding the number of mobile customers in other Sub-Saharan African countries: Benin 4 995 000, Chad 4 919 000, Niger 3 059 000, Togo 2 847 000, Mauritania 2 753 000, Gabon 1 605 000 and Central African Republic 221 000.
Landline subscribers in Mali, Burkina Faso, Mauritania and Gabon reached 184 000, 76 000, 58 000 and 30 000, respectively.
In Gabon, Maroc Telecom’s subsidiary, Moov Africa-Gabon Telecom, continues to do well more than any other country in the landline sector, with its number of customers rising from 22 000 to 25 000 at the end of December 2020, and topping 30 000 at the end of September 2021.
The company said recently that it would invest FCFA10 billion (nearly $18 million) from 2021 to 2022 to strengthen its network, targeting 141 villages and 600 km of roads.
Maroc Telecom said it was capitalising on the quality of its networks, which it continues to strengthen to support the development of data usage and provide quality of service to its subscribers.
