In a massive show of support for the victims of the Westgate mall attack, Kenyans have sent over Kes 23,008,370 via M-PESA to assist them.
With the death toll in this weekend’s militant attack standing at 68 by Sunday night, with over 175 people wounded and around 30 still unaccounted for, Kenyans came out in numbers to do what they could to support the victims of the tragedy.
Across the country, people queued to donate blood. Many more used their mobile phones to donate money to support the victims and their families, using M-PESA PayBill 848484.
Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore said the zero rated paybill had been set up to coordinate fundraising for the medical care of the victims, and would be administered by the Kenya Red Cross.
