Kenya’s leading online retailer JUMIA launched its affiliate programme this week at a colourful event at the Nanchang Hotel in Westlands, Nairobi. The event was attended by high profile as well as up-and-coming trendsetters aimed at imparting knowledge to enable bloggers to monetize their content and influence for income.
The two hour presentation that included lessons on how to improve the general outlook of blogs, post adverts, search engine optimization and the use of social media platforms, saw dozens of bloggers and trendsetters signing up for the affiliate programme.
The bloggers will simply promote their favourite products from the JUMIA website, place related ads and content on their platforms and take advantage of up to 11% commissions for sales or referrals they generate.
Parinaz Firozi, MD of JUMIA Kenya said, “The Affiliate programme will provide a remarkable and innovative way to monetize online traffic in a complete automated system that will ensure accountability.”
“We aim to build beneficial relationships with our online partners and are inviting bloggers and trendsetters to sign up for an opportunity to make money effortlessly and generate passive income by promoting a brand that is unique and different.”
In June 2014, JUMIA launched its online marketplace, a platform that allows entrepreneurs and SMEs to sell their products on the company’s website attracting companies like BATA, Nairobi Sports House, Text Book Centre, Armco and hundreds of entrepreneurs, who continue to sign up for the platform and mint millions. Jumia is optimistic the affiliate programme will muster the same confidence within the affiliate market players.
Kaluka Wanjala a blogger at Tech Arena said, “The affiliate marketing programme from Jumia is the first genuine programme I have seen in Kenya or Africa for that matter. It provides bloggers a chance to make money on the side while doing what they love. With a maximum commission of up to 11%, you have an opportunity to make enough cash to pay your bills.”
The program’s soft launch in November last year signed up 200 bloggers and influencers with 70 now generating comfortable income from their content and ads.
Moses Kemibaro a prominent blogger who also attended the event, commented: “This is the first programme of its kind in Kenya, it’s definitely an exciting way of making money for trendsetters.”
Affiliates will have a summary of the total monthly commissions due sent to them with a report detailing all the transactions within a blog, website or social media platform. In addition JUMIA will provide complete guidance on the implementation throughout the affiliate programme and products for reviews ranging from fashion, electronics and home appliances to the bloggers on request.
