Key Takeaways:
Apple’s upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max models are rumored to support 40W wired fast charging and 20W MagSafe wireless charging, as per reports circulating in China, where they are being assembled.
The current generation standard iPhone 15 and 15 Plus and the high-end iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max models can achieve peak charging speeds of 27W with an Apple-approved USB Type-C power adapter. Meanwhile, MagSafe chargers from Apple and authorized third parties can wirelessly charge the phones at up to 15W.
All four model of the iPhone 15 series can charge their batteries up to 50% in around 30 minutes with a 20W or higher power adapter. This figure is the same as its predecessors, the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 models from 2021 and 2022, respectively.
iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max Bumped to 40W of Wired and 20W of MagSafe Charging
According to reports from Chinese tech news outlet ITHome, that is all set to change with the Pro model in Apple’s soon-to-be-launched iPhone 16 lineup. The devices will get a boost of 40W of wired and 20W of wireless charging.
Insiders with knowledge of the matter say the change has been implemented to “balance and improve” the problem of increasing charging time caused by the increase in battery capacity.
The rumored 40W wired charging is an almost 50% improvement over the 27W offered by the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. Likewise, moving from 15W to 20W with MagSafe results in a 33% improvement in wireless charging speeds. These improvements will reduce the amount of time iPhone users spend tied to their chargers, resulting in a more efficient and convenient experience.
This development points fingers to another rumor that all models in the iPhone 16 lineup – bar the iPhone 16 Plus – will be powered by larger batteries. In the case of the bigger standard iPhone, it is allegedly facing a reduction in battery capacity compared to last year’s iPhone 15 Plus.
One speculation why Apple is doing so is because it wants to further the gap between the larger models in its lineup – the iPhone 16 Plus and the iPhone 16 Pro Max. With the change, the company is attempting to nudge customers toward the premium features and prices of its top-tier models.
Apple Set to Increase Battery Capacity of All iPhone 16 Models, Bar the iPhone 16 Plus
The standard iPhone’s battery will be bumped from 3,349mAh on the iPhone 15 to 3,561mAh on the iPhone 16, a 6% improvement in battery performance. Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will be upgraded to 3,355mAh and 4,676mAh, a 2.5% and 5% increase in battery life.
Another rumor is that the iPhone 16 Pro Max will boast a 30-hour battery life, compared to the 29-hour battery life offered by the current generation iPhone 15 Pro Max. This boost in battery power goes in line with reports that the premium iPhone 16 variants will sport slightly larger and brighter displays than their predecessors.
The increased wattage also points to another speculation that Apple has adopted a stacked battery technology for the iPhone 16 lineup. This technology, mainly found in electric vehicles, could deliver higher battery capacity and longer lifespan for the iPhones.
iPhone 16 Will Be Launched In September
Apple usually picks a date in September to announce the latest iPhones, and the forthcoming iPhone 16 series is also expected to follow suit. As the phones’ launch date edges closer, information surrounding them is also getting more concrete, with outlets either verifying or refuting present speculations.
The iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max are expected to be launched this fall.
