The popular social media giant Instagram hints at developing a new AI friend feature that will have customizable options. According to the recent data available, this feature would let the users talk as they like.
To be more precise, Instagram users would be able to chat with the new AI friend just like how they talk to a human friend. They will be able to ask questions to the AI which will reply with answers, the users can talk about challenges and they can even brainstorm ideas with the AI.
Although, Instagram has not made a comet on the matter. When a comment was requested from Instagram, the app declined to make any comment or answer questions. This hints that even as it seems that the app has developed a feature, there is still uncertainty about whether this feature will be launched. Or, the app might still be making more developments in it.
Features Of The ‘AI Friend’
A few screenshots of this new feature were shared by Alessandro Paluzzi, the app researcher. From these screenshots, it seems that the users as part of their customization would be able to choose the gender and age of the chatbot.
It also shows that a user can make decisions on the ethnicity and even personality of the AI friend they are going to talk to. The different personality modes of the AI as available as of now known are:
- Creative
- Enthusiastic
- Empowering
- Reserved
- Pragmatic
- Witty
There are more options to customize the AI such as to decide the hobbies of the AI and the things that the AI is interested in doing. A few options available in this are:
- Animals
- Career
- DIY
- Music
- Education
- Nature
- Entertainment
There are further options to choose the Avatar for this AI friend and also the user can give a name to the AI.
In short, there is an option in which the user can let the AI know the personality and its nature that the user has chosen to have a conversation with.
Further, there will be a chat window, and a “Start” button. By clicking on this, the user can start the conversation with the AI.

Will The “AI Friend” Feature Be Welcomed?
There have been reports of users around the globe turning into chatbots for conversations and referring to the AI as their friend. However, people mentioning AI as their friend is becoming a growing concern as it is not considered a healthy practice and as well have many threats, and safety and privacy concerns attached to it.
The Director of NYU’s Centre for Responsible AI, Julia Stoyanovich, commented that generative AI is capable of fooling users into thinking that they are interacting with another human, and that has to be considered one of the biggest problems with the way that humans use generative AI today.
Stoyanovich added that AI is capable of making human users think that it has empathy and is getting what we say to it. She sees this as dangerous because the AI has the power to leave humans vulnerable and open to manipulations and disappointments.
