The end of the first quarter in the year 2016 witnessed another interesting development in the country’s telecoms industry, especially among network operators with regards to voice and data subscription. According to a recent National Communications Authority Report for the month of March 2016 on Mobile Voice and Data Subscription trends, Airtel and MTN Ghana gave a good account of themselves as they were able to put in prudent measures to increase their subscription base when it comes to voice and data.
Ghana’s fourth network operator Airtel made impressive gains during the month of March as it recorded 2.07 percentages representing 5,012,239 increases in voice subscription, a great leap from its 1.84% as at the end of February 2016. Currently Airtel market share for the month end March stood at 13.87%.
Telecoms market leaders MTN, with recent market share of 47.05%, came second when looking at the pace of the increment. Although leading with a 17,004,445 voice subscribers at the end of March, representing a percentage increase of 1.29% from February 2016’s figure of 16,787,446 with a market share of 47.05%, MTN Ghana pace of increase in subscribers base drop from February’s 1.67% to 1.29% by the close of March.
Things seems not to go down well for Vodafone Ghana, although maintaining its second position on the table, its growth dropped from its February figure of 1.54 % to 0.52% by the end of March. Vodafone’s market share for March 2016 was 21.86%.
Tigo Ghana also observed an increase in its voice subscriber base from 0.44% by the end of February to 0.72% by the close of March representing 5,026,237 as at the end of February 2016 to 5,062,304 as at the end of March 2016 respectively. Their market share for the month under review was 14.01%.
Glo’s voice subscribers decreased from 1,103,301 as at the end of February 2016 to 1,048,635 at the end of March 2016. This reflects a percentage decrease 4.95% for the month. Their total market share for the month under review was 2.90%.
