Google plans to expand its Quick Share file transfer service to iPhones and Mac devices. Google’s iconic and easiest file transfer service is currently available only on Android and Windows devices, an expansion expected to bring more convenience to iOS and MacOS users.
Google is the search giant that has made our lives easy. From searching for random things to clearing day-to-day doubts, everything has become accessible at our fingertips since the launch. Google’s most useful and convenient feature, ‘Quick Share,’ which allows the transfer of files between Android and Windows devices, is likely to become available in Apple’s operating systems.
The Quick Share feature which is currently allowing Windows and Android users to share files across their devices, uses a local connection network to share data quickly.
The 2020 launched feature comes with almost all Android and Chromebooks when bought and if not can be easily installed from Windows PC.
Though Google has not come up with any announcement regarding the expansion, a recent bug fix in the project source code repository hints at the development of the Quick Share feature in Apple devices.
Since Apple devices do not have an official Quick Share app, this feature may not come soon or Google merely laying down a foundation for future development, we don’t know until anything official comes.
The Quick Share, which was previously known as ‘Nearby Share’ is built on Google’s well-known Nearby Share API and allows users to transfer files across devices from a distant location. One can tap on the Quick Share icon and select a share option out of Contacts, Devices, and Everyone. It shares files including photos, videos, and documents across multiple devices such as phones and laptops. The data is shared without an internet connection but requires WiFi and Bluetooth in ‘on’ mode to establish a direct connection with the desired device.
According to Android Authority reports, this bug fix can be random or a groundwork for framing the feature soon on Apple devices. Integrating the Quick Share feature on Apple OS is not as easy as it seems, convincing iOS users to download the standalone app and the permission limitations makes it more challenging.
Quick Share was the official file transfer app for Samsung Galaxy devices, later it merged with Google Nearby Share and became the official sharing tool across Android devices. It transfers files without affecting their quality or clarity. Every file shared will look exactly like the original.
Apple’s quick share option, ‘Airdrop’ allows transferring files across Apple devices but not to other OS devices. If Quick Share is introduced in iOS and macOS, it will bring advantages to both Android and iOS users. It enhances cross-platform connectivity, which allows users to share files across devices irrespective of the operating systems. It will create a unified quick-sharing ecosystem eliminating the need for depending on multiple apps for file transfer. This will also avoid dependence on cloud-based shares.
OnePlus, the leading mobile company, has already launched an iPhone-sharing feature in their latest software update, OxygenOS 15. The ‘share with iPhone’ feature runs through an iOS app. However, the hesitation of users to add another app outweighs the effectiveness of this feature. How Google is going to face these kinds of challenges makes many people wonder.
If Google’s plan comes to the limelight, Sharing between Apple and Android devices becomes effortless eventhough the acceptance of the feature among Apple users is a wait-and-watch case.
