Key Takeaways:
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 6 is a giant leap forward for the foldable smartphone industry. This year’s high-end model has drastically improved in the camera department, packing various upgrades that place it on the same line as the Samsung Galaxy S24 series.
The South Korean electronic giant ditched the 12-megapixel primary sensor it had been using since the first Galaxy Z Flip came out in 2020, replacing it with a 50MP sensor. This is the same main lens currently found in Samsung’s flagship Z Fold 6 and Galaxy S24.
With the new sensor, Samsung has improved the quality of pictures taken with the Z Flip 6 under all lighting conditions. Unlike its predecessors, the Z Flip 6 does not sport a telephoto camera, but thanks to the higher megapixel count, it can take better shots at 2x zoom, both in the standard photo settings and portrait mode.
Can You Shoot 8K Footage On The Galaxy Z Flip 6?
It wasn’t the picture quality that got the media talking about the phone, but its improvements in video recording. Samsung claims the Z Flip can record 4K footage at 60 frames per second (fps) on all cameras.
But what about 8K footage?
While the 50MP sensor is well-capable for recording videos in 8K, Samsung has limited the Z Flip 6 to 4K videos. While the company has not explained why that is the case, it could be due to thermal constraints.
Samsung has made advancements to control the hearing issues associated with its foldable smartphones. The Z Flip 6 is the first phone in the Z series to boast a vapor cooling system, which helps the device run at lower temperatures when pushed to its limits. Although the cooling system is larger than what’s found on the Galaxy S24, the Z Flip 6’s compact clamshell design makes it easy to hit higher temperatures when used aggressively.
Heating Issues And Battery And Storage Consumption Are Why The Z Flip 6 Does Not Support 8K Video Recording
The company must have understood there is no guarantee that the Galaxy Z Flip 6 would maintain its heat at accepted thermal parameters when shooting videos in 8K. This could be why they restricted the phone to 4K 60fps.
Another reason could be that 8K videos consume a lot of internal space while not offering much of a difference quality-wise compared to 4K. It also drains the battery at a considerable rate.
8K video recording won’t be missed as it is more of a gimmick to show the capabilities of Samsung’s cameras than a feature that can be used every day. On paper, the Galaxy Z Flip is one of the best phones available in the market. It has a higher resolution main camera, a brighter display, a more durable design, a bigger battery, the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, 12GB of RAM as standard, and a bespoke cooling system.
Samsung also promises up to seven years of software and security updates, meaning the Z Flip 6 will support Android 15, 16, and 17.
Galaxy Z Flip 6 With Galaxy AI Is The Best Version Of The Flip Series
The Galaxy Z Flip 6 sports a flatter design than its predecessors, which is apparent when the phone is folded. There is a more pronounced plastic frame surrounding the inner, foldable display, which gives the phone an IP48 dust and water-resistant certification. Previous versions of the Galaxy Z Flip were IPX8-rated.
Not much has changed on the hardware front, with Samsung keeping the same design formula as last year’s Galaxy Z Flip 5, but there are plenty of new software functionalities, especially with the introduction of Galaxy AI.
Features like Suggested Replies stand out. When you receive messages on the Z Flip 6, Galaxy AI will quickly read your chat thread and history to provide three context-based replies. Galaxy AI’s suggested replies are much superior to the quick responses found on previous Flips.
Samsung has also added the option to use wallpapers generated by Galaxy AI on the Z Flip 6’s cover screen, a feature that the previous models don’t support yet. There is also a cool gimmick for the cover screen called the Interpreter Mode, which lets users have a face-to-face conversation with another person who speaks a different language by translating their speech to text on the screen and doing the same with whatever the other person says.
Samsung promises to bring more features to Galaxy AI on Z Fold 6 with software updates.
