In September of last year, OpenAI launched a new voice chat feature for its popular large language model (LLM) – ChatGPT – that allowed users to communicate with the AI chatbot through spoken prompts.
Now the company has announced an addition to the feature called ‘Read Aloud’, enabling users to have written prompts read out loud to them.
Read Aloud Gives ChatGPT the Ability to Read Responses Out Loud to Users
OpenAI said it has rolled out the feature across the web version of ChatGPT as well as its iOS and Android apps.
Read Aloud supports 37 languages and can audibly articulate responses in five distinct voices. ChatGPT can automatically detect the language that is being used in the conversation.
Users can also set up ChatGPT to respond audibly, providing a hands-free conversational experience with AI.
Read Aloud is available for both GPT-4 and GPT-3.5, without costing any additional charges. The feature is handy for users who are constantly on the move and prefer listening to the responses to their questions than reading through them.
OpenAI Says Read Aloud is Convenient to Users who are Busy or have No Time to Read the Answers
Read Aloud improves accessibility and convenience to users, as they can listen to responses in real time, facilitate multitasking with the AI, and have hands-free conversations with the model. The consumer spectrum to whom the feature will be more useful is those with visual impairments.
Read Aloud builds upon ChatGPT’s existing voice chat capabilities that were introduced in September 2023.
While Voice Chat allows GPT users to communicate with the AI through spoken prompts, Read Aloud takes it up a notch by allowing them to communicate with the model through written prompts that can be read aloud.
The feature is said to enhance the versatility and functionality of ChatGPT, catering to the diverse communication preferences of users.
How To Use Read Aloud on ChatGPT?
Here are the steps to follow to enable Read Aloud feature for your ChatGPT:
- Access ChatGPT either on your preferred device, either a web browser, iPhone, or Android.
- Input a text prompt in your preferred language
- Allow ChatGPT to generate a response to your query or prompt
- Tap and hold on GPT’s answer and select the “Read Aloud” option
- A Read Aloud Player should appear at the top of your screen, where you can play, pause, fast forward, or rewind the verbal response from GPT
If you use ChatGPT on an Android or iPhone, you can simply tap and hold the text to access Read Aloud in the menu.
Whereas, on the web version of the LLM software, there will be a speaker icon located just below GPT’s response that indicates the Read Aloud feature.
All that the user has to do is click on the icon and the chatbot provides them with the controls to play the response.
Read Aloud and Voice Chat Features are Revolutionalizing Human-AI Communication
The ability to read out responses to the users’ queries sets a new standard for global communication between humans and AI.
ChatGPT’s capability to read responses, articulate an answer, understand or respond in multiple languages, and provide a versatile and accessible user experience makes it a leader in AI development.
As the sector continues to grow, features like Read Aloud and Voice Chat help the technology become more user-focused, thereby allowing developers to come up with innovative solutions that meet the requirements of the end user.
Read Aloud is available for free on both the standard and premium versions of GPT-4 and GPT-3.5.
