Readers are always excited to hear news about their favorite and most popular digital library, Kindle where they get hold of millions of ebooks with a small monthly subscription rate. But Kindle was kind of in the historical printing era where only black and white prints were available.
Amazon on Wednesday, 9 October announced their first color Kindle after years of development, the Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition. This would be exciting for those who like to buy a Kindle or update their old one. The device is focused on bringing colors to the previous paperwhite versions.
This new Kindle brings color to the comics available on the ebook with great clarity. Kindle Colorsoft has a 7-inch 300 ppi black and white and 150 ppi color display, the same as the latest Kindle Paperwhite other than the color. It has the same efficient fluidity, fast page turns, high resolution, and long battery life.
The major difference is that this is a colored version of the previous Paperwhite model, and the screen is not as smooth as a tablet with the glare and intense light, but good enough for great picture quality of comics and reading. It also uses LED technology of 12 White LEDs and 13 Amber LEDs to achieve the display.
The regular Kindle versions like Kindle Paperwhite, Oasis, and Basic use the eInk technology for their display to reduce power consumption to the lowest. However, the company that commercialized the technology, E Ink Corporation, also developed a color version in 2016 using four pigments.
E Ink Kaleido is the latest generation of color display and was officially announced in 2019. Kaleido 3 in 2023 is the latest improved version. Amazon’s executives at the launch said that the technology was not ready before and now is the time the tech is ready.
There are coatings between the display layers to improve optical performance, and enhance the color, and micro-deflectors to reduce stray light. The display is built on an oxide backplane to give a sharper contrast, smooth page turns, and improved image quality.
Even though it took time to develop, Amazon finally employed the Kindle readers’ need to enjoy comics, travel guides, cookbooks, or graphic novels with colors for the full experience. Highlighting the ebooks with different colors is also possible and you can also check the highlights by the colors later.
The new Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition has up to eight weeks of battery life, which is less than the Paperwhite edition which is three months. The eReader has 32 GB storage, is water-proof, is capable of wireless charging, zooming on images, and has an auto-adjusting front light.
Contrasting to the colors available on the display of Kindle Colorsoft, the device only comes in a single-color design of black, unlike the Paperwhite edition which is of three different colors.
The company guarantees that all Kindle devices are built to last longer and they sell the products close to making cost, making a profit from book purchases and study materials.
Along with Kindle Colorsoft, Amazon announced their new Kindle Scribe which is both readable and writable with new AI tools. Amazon claims that the texture of the Kindle and its pen is like the real note and pen. The shipment starts on December 4.
Kindle Colorsoft costs $279.99 and is available for preorders. The shipments start from 30 October. When the prices are compared, Colorsoft costs $80 more than the Paperwhite Signature Edition for its added feature of color. The prices would be reduced during the offer season.
